A contemporary form with a strong horizontal emphasis, this house provides a pleasing contrast to the tall eucalyptus forest against which it is placed. The long low form hovers over the land, and is pierced in the middle by a vertical volume containing the guest ensuite, pantry and library shelves. Effective articulation is provided by a clever arrangement of clerestory windows and vertical elements. Extensive glazing on the long sides of the horizontal form impart an intriguing transparency, which enables the backdrop of eucalyptus to be seen when approaching the front of the building. Open planning, and the omission of a dedicated entry, allow for the flexibility required by the owners. Simple materials allow the house to sit easily in its setting, and inspired landscaping enhances the horizontality of the design.
