Grand Boulevard House

Apex Building Design Studio Pty Ltd

Rather than seeking to overcome the challenges presented by a difficult site, this design cleverly works within that testing environment to create a house infused with light, warmth and a fine modern ambiance. The narrow wedge of land with a steep fall to the rear meant that solar penetration, views to neighbouring parkland, and a cohesive flow could only be gained by strategic use of the available space. What is most impressive here is the designers’ willingness to pare the building back rather than overwhelm its location to gain the essential aspects of the brief. By deeply recessing the entry away from an adjacent shopping strip, but retaining a material connection, an easy synergy is formed that acknowledges proximity but delineates disparate functions. A pleasing use of elemental materials – the heft of timber beams, earthy colour palate and a variety of subtle textures – give the façade a prominent look that also eases itself into the trees behind. The open rear section with its dramatic fall and narrowed dimensions is celebrated by the use of open tread external stairs to let light move across decks to the interiors. The designers have created a finely modulated series of spaces by embracing the possibilities inherent in a demanding site.
