This project demonstrates the ability of creative intelligent design to totally transform a small home.
The starting point was a dilapidated, turn-of-the-century, single-fronted workers cottage on 150 square metres of land. The brief was to convert it into a modern family home whilst respecting the existing, Victorian and Edwardian heritage values of the area. The result is a showpiece of architecture and interior design on a scale that far exceeds expectations.
From the street level, the existing significant heritage fabric at ground floor was retained and rejuvenated, with only a hint of what lays beyond. The rear ground and first floor additions and alterations use thoughtful articulated forms and layers to overcome site constraints, while reducing the sense of visual bulk. The unapologetically modern upper-level addition incorporates a variety of materials derived from the busy surrounding urban environment. The external form and detail is a textbook example of how to design additions in heritage areas.
The interior brings the living space to life. Thoughtfully selected pallets, joinery and finishes show the time and detail that has been poured into this project by the designer.
This is truly a worthy winner, and a great example of how intelligent creative design can convert a small Victorian classic into modern city chic.
