This alteration/addition fulfils a brief to create new living zones (kitchen dining sitting area) within a contemporary extension, while retaining backyard space. The design response provides carefully considered spaces for these functions, within an angled garden façade which is both dramatic and practical, as it provides shelter from the northern sun for the deck and the northern glazing to the living and kitchen.
The external cladding of spotted gum provides a finish of great warmth, and the integrated seating/ storage in the ‘walls’ to each side are a practical addition to the deck.
Internally, the fittings are simple yet effective, with timber and concrete finishes set off by white walls, and the window seat/aquarium/storage inset in the east wall is a delightful focal point in the sitting area.
This is an accomplished design within the constraints of a tight budget.
